Ardor pipes continue a family tradition that dates back to 1911 when four Rovera brothers began making briar pipes in Varese, Italy. Unlike the current production, the majority of the older pipes were machine made. Dorelio Rovera and his son Damiano are the carvers for the company today and have focused on hand-made products while still borrowing influences from the past.Their creations can sometimes be small (compared to a group-3), but are more commonly medium-large or even massive at times. The makers have a large following of loyal customers who collect everything from classic Italian shapes to whimsical designs and creative carvings. Finishes include rusticated, rusticated in a ring blast pattern and later blasted, sandblasted, aggressively carved, and smooth. Working exclusively with acrylic rods for stems that are fitted with a delrin tenon, or silver spigot mount, their pipes can range in color from black to pink and every hue in between.

William "Ashton" Taylor worked 25 years for Dunhill Company where he began the apprenticeship of piper when he has 15 years. In 1983, he decided to work alone and from that time, his pipes have many fans in the World. Billy, for his friends, has held a classic style that he had learned when he worked for Dunhill Company. In the beginning, he did not have any store of good seasoned and dried briar. For this motive, he had to find another solution to eliminate the tannin from the "young" wood. Now, the head-pipes are hardened into hot oil, this system gives them a good yield, and there is not a bitter taste typical of fresh briar. Billy has resolved a famous problem "caoutchouc or acrylic?" producing a mix of two materials, called asthonite, that he has provided to patent.

One of Denmark most exclusive and individual pipes is Bang. In mid of Copenhagen you will find the small studio on the first floor of a backyard where both pipemakers or better pipe artists Ulf Noltensmeier and Per Hansen are producing approx. 500 Bang-pipes a year. Bang pipes are high-valued and exclusive unique pieces, that are produced by pure handwork from very selected first class Plateau-briarwood. Carlo Scotti created the Castello pipe in 1947, in a little artisan workshop. His aim was to produce a pipe which was technically and aesthetically at the absolute summit of the quality "parametro". This quality means many things which are hard to explain. It means working only and exclusively the best briar, that is: extra-extra. Knowing how to work at the right moment, not before or after. Knowing how to work with respect for precise parameters of functionalism, aesthetics and good taste. Choosing only shops of the highest professional reputation, once the briar has been transformed into a pipe. And many other things. So today the "immagine Castello" has been created as a perfect reflection of what Carlo Scotti set out to do 50 years ago, and that is what Castello pipes are really all about His work-passion continues unaltered under the faith full guidance of his daughter Savina and Franco Coppo.Only the few Castello official retailers they can boast inside their shop the Castello pipes.

The IL CEPPO brand has been in production since the late 1970's but, in spite of its overall good value, is not well known in all parts of the United States. Partly this is because of a limited supply of pipes and partly because the brand has not been put in front of the pipe smoking public through a national venue. Giorgio Imperatori, an architect, had a passion for pipes and in 1978 began to design and make IL CEPPO. Always considered a good value and very good for smoking the brand did not make folks stop and take notice until 1995 when Franco Rossi joined the firm.Formerly a master carver for Ser Jacopo, Franco brought with him a true elegance of design and a unique flair that now helps IL CEPPO stand apart. Giorgio has retired to his farmhouse and the pipes are now all made by Franco and his sister Nadia.Franco Rossi and his sister produce 1500 pipes each year.

By Les Wood embody the revival of English pipe making that was initiated by Ashton in the early 1980s. Oil treated in the tradition of both Dunhill and Ashton, Les Wood pipes are renowned for their pleasant, slightly nutty flavor and remarkable smoking characteristics. About 90% of them are made in rusticated “Bark” finish and the balance are a smooth “Reo” or “Root” finish. Les Wood was the master silver smith at Alfred Dunhill Ltd. before starting L. & J.S. Briars so its not surprising that all of the pipes have silver work. He still does all Dunhill’s the silver work. All Ferndown pipes have stems cut from top quality German Vulcanite. They don’t seem to discolor.   The Ferndown pipe represents the best of England’s “new generation” of quality pipe makers. Production is limited to around 700 pipes a year so we are extremely pleased to able to offer these classic British pipes.

Northern Briar was started by Ian Walker's Grandfather, George Walker, who started working for Duncan Briars in England in 1922, and in 1931 became the factory foreman at Duncan Briar's. After a nine year apprenticeship he was in charge of training the staff of pipe makers and pipe finishers. In 1958 he left Duncan's after 36 years.In 1958 Ian's Grandfather and Ian's Father, Peter Walker, started a pipe repair service, repairing pipes for tobacconists' all over the United Kingdom.In 1972 Ian left school and started work in the family business. His first day at work he had to sweep the floor of the workshop for an hour, make coffee, and only then was he allowed to polish some pipes!! Then his dad told him to go home, change clothes and go to his grandfather's house where he spent the evening making silver rings for pipes from a silver sheet.In 1983 his parents bought a Tobacconist Shop in Heaton Moor, Stockport, England. Ian was doing all the repairs by then, and was the foremost repairman in the U. K. He thought that he might give it a go at making pipes himself for the shop. This went well. Ian then decided to start making pipes for the local shops. Soon after he met Bill Taylor of Ashton fame. Bill encouraged and helped him.In 1999 Ian did his first trade show for Tobacconist and Pipe Clubs all over the United Kingdom. Last year he made the pipe for the 2005 British Pipe Smoking Championship. He had to make 50 pipes that were all the same.In 2006, he did his first show overseas in Chicago where Skip Elliott saw his work and decided they would be a great addition to our current selection of English Pipes we now carry at The Briary. Later this year, Ian will be taking his Northern Briar Pipes to exhibit in Dortmund, Germany.Ian Walker uses Italian briar from the same source as Bill Taylor. Every pipe is totally hand made by Ian Walker and all have hand cut stems. Bill Taylor says that Ian Walker does the best stem work in England. His pipes are in the best tradition of classic British pipe making.An interesting aside is that Ian lives with his wife Katerina on a canal boat. His work shop is on the boat. Under British law he can only be moored at one spot for two weeks. So every fortnight Ian moves his house and workshop to a new location on a canal or river in the England.

Established in 1923, Parker of London is one of England's most experienced and prestigious pipe makers. Parker of London has always aimed to produce high quality pipes at affordable prices, a tradition which continues today. The reputation of the Parker Pipe has spread far and wide and the Parker pipe smoker is the envy of many of his peers throughout the world. Every care and attention to detail has been taken into account to make a Parker Pipe a joy and pleasure to smoke for years to come. A Parker Pipe is a precious item. Each pipe is made in the traditional way. Only the finest seasoned Mediterranean briar is used, which comes from the the root of the Erica Arborea plant (commonly known a White Heather). The burl of the root can take between 25 and 75 years to mature the point which satisfies our experts who trasform the rough-cut briar into a pipe bowls. Parker Pipes are made to a high standard and are crafted into a traditional English shapes. Great care is taken in the hand-finishing of the pipe bowls. Every pipe is fitted with a quality ebonite mouthpiece, chosen so as to complement the balance of the perfectly.

He quickly became the Great Master of the factory and for many years he shaped the most famous Mastro de Paja freehand shapes, giving to the popular Pesaro brand a peculiar and original characteristic. Peter Klein has a long history in the trade. He taught himself the art of pipemaking many years ago – the internet was not born yet, there were no forums or blogs and also no colleagues that showed him how to start. Nevertheless he became acquainted with some renowned danish pipe makers and learned some tricks by looking over their shoulders from time to time. His affinity to Denmark is clearly visible in the shapes he creates – they are inspired by the danish classic. Well known archetypes are newly interpreted, silver rings, wood or acryl rings and even mammoth rings are attached.Peter Klein fulfilled his dream and now lives in Denmark. He makes 350 to 400 freehand pipes every year, 70% are with 9mm filter.“For him, It’s not only work…it’s also relax!”.

Peter Heeschen is one of the Danish master carver. He is no stranger to serious pipe collectors. The pipes are all handcarved in a small workshop in the city of Holmstrup, about 4 US-miles from the center of Odense on the island of Funen. A simple man who loves life and loves the natural beauty of his small farm, the passion that Peter feels for the beauty of the world around him comes through in the works of art he creates from blocks of briar. With a production of approximately 20-25 pipes/month. This is one of the smallest of the Danish carvers. But don't be fooled by the low production; these pipes are true masterpieces.

"Proxima" is the result of passion, dedication, and hard work. Every step of the production process is crucial to ensure the highest quality and attention to detail in our product.

Piero Vitale is the artisan behind Proxima, the creative mind, and guardian of quality. He handles the selection of briar, the design of each model, and quality control at various stages of manufacturing.

Production, on the other hand, is entrusted to two pillars of the Italian pipes, namely Molina and Paolo Croci. They are well-established manufacturing entities recognized by aficionados of slow smoking.
The Proxima pipes are designed with the aim of providing an extremely comfortable experience, thanks to their lightweight and compact dimensions. The design is characterized by simplicity and the harmony of lines, inspired by models of classical tradition reinterpreted through a modernist perspective. Special attention has been devoted to the finishing touches, with the goal of maximizing the potential of the briar based on the characteristics of the various blocks. Furthermore, emphasis has been placed on the use of sought-after inserts in materials, giving each artifact a unique and distinctive charact

Few Pipemakers in the world today can boast such a long tradition. Three generations have dedicated themselves to this job, passing on from father to son a rich store of knowledge and continuity of which we are very proud. We number ourselves among the small circle of workshops considered “historical”.

It all began in 1912 with Stefano Santambrogio, the founder of the company.
Born in 1865 at Meda in Brianza, he moved when very young to Gallerate where he found a job in the first company in the Varesotto manufacturing pipes of various kinds: the Manifattura Pipe Fratelli Lana.
In 1899, after the closure of this company he moved with his wife to Gavirate and was hired in the position of manager at the Fabbrica Pipe Rossi of Barasso.
In 1910 Stefano, enterprising, capable and charismatic, acquired a watermill and adjacent farmhouse in “Borghetto” at Gropello di Gavirate. In spite of numerous difficulties he began producing his first pipes using the watermill as his only source of energy powered by the nearby Roggia Molinara (a wheel with a nominal HP of 4.55 as recorded in documents dated November 15th 1922).
In 1926 the first electrical power became available and the waterwheel then worked alongside the first electrical motor of 5HP. This permitted him to increase the number of workers and in consequence the production to satisfy the growing demand for pipes. The production reached its peak in the 1930’s and 1940’s. 130 workers were employed and about 100.000 pipes produced each month and exported to every corner of the world.

In 1951, after the death of the founder, his sons Renzo and Armando ensured the continuity of the company until 1981 when Stefano Santamgrogio, the present owner, took over on the death of his father, Renzo.

After my grandfather Stefano and my father Renzo, today it is another Stefano, me, who ensures the continuity of this work.

I was born in 1952 and I am told that before learning to say “papà” I said “pipe”, demonstrating how closely this object was in symbiosis with my family. So, inevitably, I began at a very early age to frequent the family workshop carrying out small jobs during the school holidays. In 1968 I began working full-time to help my father who was by that time in his 70’s. I continued to study following evening courses at the tecnical college in Varese while at the same time being able to assume in all effects the title of Pipemaker.

I like my job, I am proud of what I do and I am proud to continue a tradition that I consider a rare and precious patrimony. I am sure many envy me.
Today in my small workshop I work together with my wife, Sara, and a trusted employee who has more than 10 years experience behind her. I chose to specialize in skilled, handicrafted products as it is not only a job for me: it is a passion. It has not been easy to go down this path. There have been many problems to confront, not the least of which is the diffidence of those incapable of objective opinions on evaluating a pipe.

Today the production is limited so that all pipes are made with such care and attention that sometimes I am sad to see them go. In every one of them there is a bit of me. They bring out my creativity, the desire to produce the best and I enjoy the beauty of them.

My pipes are produced following a classic model. Their lines must be clean and harmonious and well-balanced. The briarwood I use is all of highest quality Italian provinence, seasoned naturally over a long period to best guarantee an optimum result.

I know from experience that to create a good pipe the uniqueness of this spendid material must of necessity marry the simplicity and purity of line without sacrificing originality where needed but never falling into the trap of approximation or the banal.

A good pipe is never created by chance.

It is the fruit of the equilibrium of the elements, an inate sense of esthetics, a skillful hand and, not least, careful attention to its functional character.
My pipes are made in this way, created for a good smoke, to be beautiful and to be appreciated over time. They contain all the tradition, the experience and the pride of three generations of Pipemakers and represent not just a label but also their page in history.

My passion for woodworking started when I was just a child.At that time, I use to spend a lot of time in the workshop of my grandfather, trying to get something out from the pieces of wood that he cut for me (my grandfather was a carpenter and then became a lutist and sculptor once he retired).I've always loved manual works and I've experienced many different arts during my life, like painting, playing music and wood carving.I discovered the smoking pipe's world in the 2014, when a friend of mine introduce me to it. Just few months later, it became natural start carving my first pipes and I soon felt in love with this "work", that is actually more like a pleasant game for me. When I've seen for the first time, the works of pipe makers like Victor Yashtylov, Kent Rasmussen, Tom Eltang, Eder Mathias, Gamboni and many others, I've found out that pipe making may be something more than an handicraft work.I've discovered that with creativity, skills, by designing and carving harmonious shapes that highlight the beauty of the briar, a pipe can became something very close to a piece of art. That made everything much more interesting to me.My current production is about 80 pipes per year, all completely handmade with rasps, files, sand paper, dremelI and a small lathe that I use for the pipe stems only, that I work from rod of ebonite.Most of them are made with smooth finish, but I also make some sandblasted and few rusticated.I use the best quality of briar (only plateaux and ebouchon extra extra quality) stored in my workshop for about 2 years before using it. Most of the briar that I use comes from Tuscany or Calabria, whilst the stems are made with German ebonite.

Luigi Viprati has built a justifiably powerful reputation for hand crafting some of the most breathtaking straight grains available anywhere. No one realizes this more than Viprati who has built strong personal relationships with the mills or "segerie" which supply his briar, and he visits them periodically to hand select each block of the extra-extra plateaux briar. Recently, Viprati lengthened his usual visit by accompanying the harvesting crew into the dry hills of Tuscany. There he saw how the briar is wrested from the earth, and the meticulous handling it goes through to ensure the smoking characteristics of fine briar.

W.O.Larsen

The W. Ø. Larsen shop at Amagertorv 9, Copenhagen, has been known to pipe lovers for a long, long time. It is the same location where Wilhelm Ockenholt Larsen opened a cigar speciality shop in 1864. Eventually, W. Ø. Larsen became internationally recognised for its excellence in pipes, pipe tobaccos and cigars. Niels Larsen´s father, Ole W. Ø. Larsen, is a talented designer who began producing pipes in the early 1950s. And it didn´t take long before demand for his pipes outgrew production capacity. Therefore, he created a small workshop in which top Danish pipe makers would design their own wares for W.Ø. Larsen. This arrangement continues today. Niels W.Ø. Larsen is a seasoned salesman and speaks several languages fluently; and his pipe makers deliver superb quality - something that ultimately reflects the treasured reputation of the W. Ø. Larsen pipes. Presently, W. Ø. Larsen´s production consists of three series - each one a benchmark for quality.
